Fudging information on a resume is never a good idea, as Yahoo’s CEO Scott Thompson is discovering. Thompson is not alone. Although he carried off this masquerade for several years, his undoing came as the result of an attempt by investor Daniel Loeb to gain seats on Yahoo’s board.

Why did Thompson perpetuate this “white lie”? Will his apology for his “inadvertent error” save his job? Given his successful track record, he may well survive this crisis of confidence.

However, the average Joe or Jane may not be so lucky. To be caught falsifying information on a resume can in fact land a person in jail, as student Adam Wheeler learned.

A current trend on LinkedIn encourages padding a job title. Don’t get creative with your job title. “Accounting Department Manager” does not equate to “CEO of Finance”, and when background checks are completed, such a misnomer will surely be highlighted.

There is a distinct difference between the LinkedIn headline, and the position title in the Experience secton. The LinkedIn headline serves the same purpose as a news story headline: to capture the reader’s attention. So while you might feel your position is best described a “Chief Cat Herder”, chances are your official title as it appears on your position description is the more mundane “Department Manager”. By all means, use “Chief Cat Herder” in the headline, but make sure you follow through and explain that headline in the summary section of your profile. Under Experience, however, listen to Joe Friday, and state “just the facts”.

The same goes for your education. Dig out that diploma and read the degree. You may prefer not to mention the subject area; however, you should not insinuate or otherwise state a degree in a subject area that was in fact not conferred by the diploma. Make note of the name of the institution conferring the degree as well. You don’t want to confuse “Boston University” with “MIT”, as one executive did.

Continuing education courses should also be readily identified as continuing ed, and not as coursework leading to a higher education degree. If the coursework will ultimately result in a degree, note that, but make sure to indicate the degree has not yet been earned.

Word does travel. Take the time now to review your resume and clean it up. Google yourself, and remove old resumes from the web, unless they provide useful information about prior employment.

Remember, your resume is not an exercise in creative writing. Don’t let anyone tell you it is.

Computerworld reports that its 2012 Salary Survey found that “87% of hiring managers who responded expect IT staff head count to increase in the next 12 months or remain the same. Only 25% of the total respondents reported hiring freezes, compared with 39% last year. Other negative indicators, such as salary freezes, budget cuts and layoffs, are all in retreat.”

Data examined by TechServe Alliance supports the contention that businesses are hiring greater numbers of IT professionals. This is manifested by low unemployment rates for many IT and computer related occupations, which were significantly lower than the overall unemployment rate that was between 8.2 and 8.3 percent in Q1 2012.

The number of U.S. information technology jobs increased by 23,000 in February to an all-time high of more than 4.1 million jobs, according to a monthly index of IT jobs developed by the TechServe Alliance. January’s record surpasses the previous high set in September 2008 when IT employment reached 4,088,600.

On an annual basis, IT jobs were up 2.5 percent in 2011, compared with a growth rate of 1.5 percent in 2010. These latest numbers are based on re-benchmarked data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics this month.

“After reaching an all-time high in January, February’s accelerating rate of growth in IT employment is further confirmation of our earlier projections that demand for IT professionals would remain strong for the foreseeable future,” said Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance. “Based on the data and the anecdotal reports of my member companies, there is clearly ‘war for talent’ underway in the high-demand IT skill sets. Companies that fail to adjust to this changing landscape will find it increasingly difficult to meet their IT staffing needs.”

TechServe Alliance is a collaboration of IT staffing firms, solutions firms, clients, consultants and suppliers dedicated to advancing excellence and ethics within the IT services industry.

Each year JDRF presents the Living and Giving Award to individual(s) or a company in the community that embody the spirit of giving through daily conduct centered on improving lives within South Carolina. JDRF Palmetto Chapter executive director, Dana Bruce, has worked with the Blaus for the past 5 years and says, “Mr. and Mrs. Blau have been an integral part in the success of the Palmetto Chapter’s fundraising. After experiencing a family loss due to type 1 diabetes (T1D), the Blaus focused on preventing the tragedy from striking other families by donating their time, money and name to JDRF.”

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, Gibson and Associates, Lexington Medical Center, Palmetto Health, and McGowan Hood and Felder are just a few midlands businesses that are showing their support as sponsors of the event. The Blaus, along with these businesses, are heroes in JDRF’s eyes. The JDRF gala is set to raise $250,000 for diabetes research. The black-tie event, themed Hearts and Heroes will include a silent and live auction, live music from BandKamp, a seated dinner and an open bar. In addition to presenting Roger and Barbara Blau with the Living and Giving award, the Gala will also showcase a personal testimony from Grant Parks, a 14-year-old JDRF Junior Ambassador with T1D. Other JDRF Junior Ambassadors will be in attendance. They will share their stories and everyday journeys with diabetes as well as say thank you to their heroes—those that support JDRF by attending the gala. JDRF is proud that more than 80% of revenue goes directly to diabetes research- and to ultimately finding a cure for T1D.

For ticket information, please call (803) 782-1477 or visit www.jdrfpalmetto.org.

About T1D

In T1D, a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. People with T1D need to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin (with injections or an insulin pump) multiple times every day, and carefully balance insulin doses with eating and daily activities throughout the day and night. However, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, and even with that intensive care, a significant portion of the day is still spent with either high or low blood sugar, placing people with T1D at risk for devastating complications such as heart attack, stroke, blindness, and amputation.

About JDRF

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF is the largest charitable supporter of T1D research. The goal of JDRF is to improve the lives of every person affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners who share this goal. Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.6 billion to T1D research. More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education. Past JDRF research efforts have helped to significantly improve the care of people with this disease, and have expanded the critical scientific understanding of T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered.

InformationWeek’s annual Outlook 2012 Survey displayed a very bullish outlook on 2012. The report, which queries 605 business technology professionals on their plans for IT spending and hiring in 2012, found that 25 percent of companies are planning to expand IT staff and only nine percent will be cutting back. That’s in stark comparison to two years ago when only 14 percent said they were expanding and 18 percent said they were cutting back.

Fifty-six percent of participants say they will be spending more on IT than in 2011, 28 percent said their spending plans are flat, and only 16 percent expect to shrink their IT budgets. Most encouraging is that 18 percent plan to raise their IT spend by more than ten percent, which is up from last year’s response of 15 percent.

However, InformationWeek presents several reasons why growing project demand will not necessarily lead to more hiring. Despite only three percent reporting that the demand for new IT projects is dipping, almost one-third (30 percent) report there is a hiring freeze and “won’t be allowed to fill openings” in 2012. “CIOs continue to rely heavily on outsourcing as the variable component to their workforces, absorbing the peaks of IT demand as well as fulfilling specialized skills.” The editors go on to report that, there’s strong demand for mobile app development, but much of that work is outsourced and cloud computing allows companies to add IT capabilities without the same staff.”

In comparison, CIO Insight also released a study with some interesting observations. CIO Insight’s 2012 IT Investment Patterns Study used a random sample from parent company Ziff-Davis Enterprises. The 329 respondents in organizations with 50 or more employees were familiar with their company’s budget and spending levels. They report three broad trends for 2012:

Areas that organizations may have given short shrift to in the past due to the economy are now being funded in 2012. Increased investments in security are an example of what the editors call “Reversion.”

Increased popularity for organizations in mobility and cloud-related spending, or what CIO Insight is referring to as “Innovation”. Most (91 percent) of organizations plan to spend 14.6 percent more on mobile devices, which is the third largest spending category, surpassed only by servers and desktops / notebooks.

Spending continues in existing areas such as infrastructure and software. CIO Insight calls this trend “Integration” to ensure established areas don’t “get lost to the newcomers” (e.g. mobile and cloud).
